Group Lessons at HCC

Announcement

We are in the planning stages of offering group lessons at the club. These lessons will be taught by Life Master Larry Englebretson. Topics will vary and should appeal to many different levels of players. They will range from novice to advanced and in between. The topics will be posted in advance on the Announcements and Calendar so check back often for details. They will be 90 minutes long and will be on one or more Saturday mornings each month, probably from 9:45 AM - 11:15 AM. Cost of lesson will be $20 for Members and $25 for Non-members. Class size will be limited to 15 players. Larry promises the topics will be interesting and anyone who have heard Larry speak on chess knows that Larry is very knowledgeable and passionate about teaching chess. Larry is an experienced and popular teach instructor in the Houston area. He teaches at T.H. Rogers School as well as at The Village School. The $20 - $25 cost is a bargain to take a 90 minute lesson from a seasoned Life Master. Hourly lessons from teachers of Larry's qualifications can range from $35 - $50 and up (or $50 - $75 for an hour and a half). Also, from time to time, we will have guest instructors giving group lessons and their topics and dates will be posted as well.

Mark Dixon has taken leave of absence as Chief TD

Announcement

Members and Friends of HCC: As you may have heard, our longtime Chief TD, Mark Dixon, has decided to take a leave of absence from TD duties to concentrate on playing more chess. On behalf of HCC, its members and supporters, I want to thank Mark for his many years of service to the club. His loyalty and dependability to the cause and the growth of the club was unwavering and is greatly appreciated. The New HCC and its move to the current facility is a culmination of Mark's recommendation and vision for a larger and nicer facility. Its potential for growth and success from this point is in no small measure due to his assistance and for that, I and the club will always be grateful. Please join me in wishing Mark well in his quest for greater chess knowledge and play! We will hopefully see him around the club as a player often! Thanks Mark. Dennis

Tournament Directors Needed!!

Announcement

If anyone is interested in being a TD for the Houston Chess Club, please send me an email with your qualifications and TD level and experience. At this time, I am not sure what day or days I would need a TD but want to get an idea of how many and who might be interested in helping out the club. Club level is enough but higher level of TD would be given preference. It may be in a back-up role or to fill in as necessary. I would like to have at least 2 and perhaps 3 successful candidates. In any case, send email to me directly and not to the club. Use the contact link and click on my name and let me know. Leave a phone number and I'll call you during the week to discuss further. Thanks. Dennis Ng

SAT. TOURNAMENT CHANGE! SCHOLASTIC SECTION ADDED!

Announcement

Based on input and requests from numerous players and parents, our Saturday tournaments will add a Scholastic Section with 4 Rds of G/45 beginning Saturday, January 16, 2010. It will only be for Junior players rated under 1200. All Adults, regardless of rating, plus all Juniors rated 1200 and above must play in the Championship Section (3 Rds of G/60). The 1200 rating cut-off may be adjusted as necessary in the future but for the time being, we will start with 1200 as the separation between Championship and Scholastic Sections. Please click on Calendar for more details regarding EF and prizes, etc. We will try this new expanded format for a while to see if it works and brings in new lower rated players who want to improve but not play in the higher rated section. At the same time, this is to accommodate the requests from higher players not wishing to play players rated 1000 points or more lower. Again, we will test this format for a while. We cannot please everyone at all times but if we get enough lower rated scholastic players, this will address the concerns raised. To make it work, please help recruit some lower rated players for the Scholastic Section. For those weeks we don't get at least 5 entries in the Scholastic Section, we may merge them into the Championship Section that week.

EF - Same for Juniors and Adults - 01/01/2010

Announcement

Effective January 1, 2010 - EF is same for Adults and Juniors. EF will be the same for Adults and Juniors for all tournaments. Since the Prize Funds for Juniors are no different than Adults, it is equitable for all players to pay the same EF regardless of USCF ratings or age. Many of our Junior players are higher rated than some of the Adults who participate in our tournaments (and therefore have as good or better chances of winning a Prize as the Adults) and it is not fair for the Adults to subsidize the Prize Fund for others. The only instances where we will have a difference in EF is where we will have different classes and different prize structures, where the classes are based on ratings and not age. Friday and Sunday tournaments already have the same EF for Adults and Juniors so this change affects only the Wednesday and Saturday tournaments (as well as any other tournaments we may add during the week). Please check Calendar for tournament details. In summary: The EF is as follows: Wednesday: $35 for Adults/Juniors plus $10 Non-member fee. Friday: $15 for Adults/Juniors plus $5 Non-member fee. Saturday: $15 for Adults/Juniors plus $5 Non-member fee. Sunday: $10 for Adults/Juniors plus $5 Non-member fee.
